Moments of an Empty Mind

Posture, breath, and a quiet mind - these are the fundamental components of Zazen, the seated meditation at the heart of Japanese Zen practice. While other forms of Buddhism entered Japan as early as the 7th century, Zen arrived centuries after, introduced from China in the 12th century by monks like Dogen and Eisai. At its core, Zen Buddhism invites practitioners to sit in stillness, allowing thoughts to dissolve without resistance and seek enlightenment through action and a cultivated mindfulness. At this spacious temple, located on the outskirts of Sapporo, strive towards centering yourself with an immersion in Zazen meditation, guided by the temple's head monk. Learn more about the core tenets of Soto-style Zen Buddhism during one-on-one conversation with the monk, discovering the philosophy behind the practice, before entering the main hall and starting your Zen meditation session. In the hush of the temple, surrounded by incense and stillness, you may just catch a glimpse of clarity — not through words, but through the profound silence of being.
