Preserve, Observe, and Enjoy

Driven to the point of near extinction over 100 years ago due to excessive hunting, the Japanese red-crowned crane population is now steadily expanding, thanks in part to dedicated conservation efforts. The crane itself is an ubiquitous image of Japan, symbolizing longevity and fidelity, depicted in various artworks, and even called the “God of the Wetland” by Hokkaido's indigenous Ainu people. These rare birds possess impressive size, towering up to 2 meters tall, and are known for conducting elegant courtship choreography that has provided inspiration for a variety of dances and performances in Japan. While most red-crowned cranes migrate between different locations, the populations in Eastern Hokkaido are mainly non-migratory, sustained by the wetlands during all seasons. The town also actively participates in preservation efforts, supplying resources in times of food scarcity to ensure that the red-crowned crane population can continue to thrive and flourish. Led by a local nature expert, observe these magnificent giants in their natural habitats while learning more about the conservation efforts of local organizations and people.
