Infusing Nature into Art
Tucked away in the lively heart of downtown Sapporo, a serene classroom offers a peaceful retreat—where petals, stems, and space are arranged in perfect harmony. Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, traces its roots to the 7th century as offerings placed on Buddhist altars. The Ohara school, however, began in 1895 under the guidance of its visionary founder, Unshin Ohara. Unlike more rigid traditional styles, Ohara ikebana celebrates natural beauty and imaginative expression, often using flat containers to craft "landscape arrangements" that evoke scenic vistas. Today, more than a million students worldwide study this style, drawn by its blend of artistic freedom and reverence for nature. In Sapporo, join the head instructor of the Ohara school in a private, hands-on lesson. Under their expert guidance, you’ll create your own arrangement—bringing seasonal blooms to life with mindful creativity.
