Forged from fire

Nakajima Island, in the middle of Lake Toya, is the result of a lava dome created by volcanic activity under the lake roughly 50,000 years ago. The island sports its own unique ecosystem with distinctive giant trees and indigenous Ezo deer. The terrain of the island is relatively flat making it an easy course for most anyone of any age, and perfect for families with nature-curious children. In addition to opening your eyes to the island’s flora and fauna, experienced tour guide Yuji may offer spontaneous “workshops” on scents of the island such as the Sakhalin Spruce or the Japanese pepper tree. Trekking Nakajima Island will offer a potpourri of experiences to delight all five senses.
