Stillness and Silence, Soto-Style
In the quiet stillness of the main hall, the golden, arched frame of a radiant lotus statue catches the light—its gleam echoing the Buddhist ideal of purity emerging from adversity. The lotus, growing from muddy waters to bloom untainted, symbolizes the potential for enlightenment within all beings. Among the various Buddhist paths, Zen Buddhism emphasizes direct experience, especially through zazen (seated meditation), as a means to clarity and awakening. Introduced to Japan in the 12th century, Zen flourished, focusing on silent introspection and the integration of mindfulness into daily life. This temple, relocated 75 years ago from the then-imperial territory of Sakhalin to the heart of Sapporo, now serves as a modern center of Soto Zen practice. Operated by the same family since its founding, it is currently led by the seventh-generation head monk. Under his thoughtful guidance, step into the contemplative world of Zen Buddhism, where the core practice of zazen encourages stillness and spiritual insight. With steady posture, controlled breath, and a quieting of thought, the path to awakening begins.
