Row, Row, Row Your Boat
Crystal-clear spring water feeds the Bibigawa River as it winds through the serene landscapes of Chitose. Once part of an ancient seabed, the land has transformed into a low-lying peatland, giving the river its distinctive character—a gentle current and shallow, shimmering waters that change beautifully with the seasons. In centuries past, this river served as a vital transportation route for the indigenous Ainu people, who traveled its length from inland villages to the sea to gather fish and other resources. Today, echoes of that history remain: splintered wooden oars, the weathered frame of an Ainu canoe, and other remnants still rest quietly along the banks. As you cruise down this historic river, guided by a local outdoor expert, you’ll not only witness natural beauty but also gain a deeper understanding of the land’s rich cultural heritage—where every ripple in the water tells a story.
