The Sound of a Nation

The beating sound of taiko drums has echoed throughout the domains of religion, warfare, and entertainment in Japan for thousands of years. According to popular Japanese Shinto mythology, taiko drums were created due to a falling out between the sun goddess Amaterasu and her brother, the god of storms and sea, Susanoo, and since then have acted as accompaniment for rituals and religious ceremonies, the tool for setting the marching pace of armies, and the foundation for classical theater. Today, modern taiko performers travel all across the globe, displaying the powerful sound of this ancient instrument for global audiences and reimagining new styles of sound and performance. In this workshop, led by a professional taiko master and one of Hiroshima's leading taiko figures who's organized countless productions and collaborated with artists of all genres, immerse into the beating pulse of Japan's musical heritage.
