Continuous Revolution
When sharp blade meets the rotation of a lathe, polished brilliance is born. Woodturning, known as "rokuro" in Japanese, is a traditional woodcraft that utilizes a spinning machine to create smooth, even pieces from high-quality timber. After the artisan carefully selects the base wood, taking grain, bumps, and other characteristics into consideration, while also allowing the chosen timber ample time to release moisture, the precise process of bringing the wood to life begins. Ideally suited for work requiring a smooth surface, like plates, tea cups, and bowls, the warmth of the wood shines through, and traditionally, the urushi lacquer coating is kept deliberately light in order to showcase the organic elegance of the natural grain. At this woodworking studio, located right across the coast from Miyajima Island and Itsukushima Shrine's famed floating torii gate, dive deeper into the art of rokuro woodturning with a woodworking artisan. As the scent of freshly carved wood fills the air and delicate shavings fall in curls, you’ll discover the quiet satisfaction of coaxing beauty from simplicity.
