Harping on 13 Strings
Highly regarded for not only their beautiful sound but also their meticulous design, the koto harps of Fukuyama are the only instrument in Japan designated a traditional craft. Although the koto’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Chinese guzheng harp, Japanese carving practices and musical styles helped to develop the instrument into something synonymous with the archipelago. Master koto craftsperson Yoshiaki-san has been continuing this carving style, utilizing only traditional handiwork techniques and locally sourced materials. While most workshops employ several artisans, each specializing in a separate part of the process, Yoshiaki-san produces every instrument from start to finish, resulting in a more seamless product. In this experience, tour a traditional koto studio and learn the techniques needed to reveal the instrument hidden in each piece of wood. Then, enjoy a private koto performance organized by the master himself.
