The Right Frame of Mind

Developing alongside the more widely known art of calligraphy, gakuso refers to the craft of paper-making and picture framing which preserves an artist’s brushwork. The techniques of the practice date back to the 7th and 8th centuries, a time of intense cultural exchange between China and Japan. As the calligraphy paper is so delicate, a refined touch and skillset is necessary to ensure symmetry of the ends and preservation for decades to come. In this highly unique experience, tour a gakuso atelier and learn about the creation process for traditional hanging scrolls, frames, and bindings, as well as the history of calligraphy. Then, utilize craft techniques to make your own goshuincho, a traditional stamp book for recording memories.
