A Breath of Quiet
As the senko incense stick burns and slowly melts away into smoke, the sound of a bell will herald the end of a zazen meditation session. Before clocks were invented, the burning of senko incense marked just enough time for one session of zazen, before taking a break and then continuing onwards. It would also provide a lingering fragrance to accompany your quiet meditation. At a temple just a few steps away from a bustling shopping street in the heart of Tokyo, immerse yourself in a zazen meditation session surrounded by a small forest of trees, which create a boundary between the temple and the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood flowing by. Standing firm since the age of the Meiji Restoration, this temple is steeped in history. After a peaceful zazen meditation, join the head monk, who is also a tea master, for a tea ceremony in the temple's tea room, to further immerse in the sounds of nature in this small pocket of calm amidst the cityscape.
