Inking It In
For generations of manga artists, the tsuke-pen, or dip pen, has been one of the most essential tools of their craft. By changing the pen nib, artists can achieve a myriad of textures and styles. Two main types are the versatile G-pen, capable of producing both bold and delicate lines, while the maru-pen (or round-pen) is used for finer lines, such as the facial features and expressions. Other types, such as the saji-pen (spoon-pen), offer their own distinctive qualities and were even favored by legendary manga artist Tezuka Osamu. By utilizing various pen nibs, manga artists can express different genres with linework alone. Bold, dynamic lines often characterize shonen manga, while the softer, more delicate linework of shoujo manga emphasizes emotion and character expression. Through variations in line weight, texture, and technique, artists can convey atmosphere, movement, and feeling entirely in black and white. As the age of digital publication of manga and online publication progresses, there are manga artists who still pursue ink and paper over stylus and screen. At this professional manga artist’s atelier, step into the world of analog manga crafting and learn the fundamental penwork that manga artists utilize to bring depth, emotion, and life to the page.
