Balancing Power
Sumo began as a ritual performed for the gods to pray for a bountiful harvest within the grounds of a shrine. During the Warring era of constant conflict and warfare, sumo was also utilized as a means to train strong men. When the Edo era brought about a time of peace, sumo moved towards a form of entertainment, with teams of professional sumo wrestlers forming, turning towards more of what we know as sumo today. However, the ritualistic elements remain in sumo, from the building of the platform on which the bouts take place, to the suspended Shinto shrine-like roof hanging from the ceiling, and finally, to the movements and actions done by the rikishi (wrestlers) themselves before, during, and after the bouts. Witness the world of sumo led by a retired sumo rikishi and learn more about all things sumo, including how a bout is decided and what the life of a sumo rikishi is like, as well as see demonstrations of different sumo techniques.
