Keeping Balance

An internationally known Japanese martial art, judo involves throwing techniques with a focus on flexibility over brute force, derived from jujitsu. In contrast, jujitsu was a series of techniques meant to injure or end your opponent on the battlefield, developed during the Warring States era in Japanese history, when battles were part of daily life. The founder of judo, Jigoro Kano, sought to create a "way" of hand-to-hand martial arts that did not rely on brute force alone; a "way" that matched the more peaceful times heralded by the Meiji era, when Japan officially opened its ports to the rest of the world. Enter this local temple dojo in central Kyoto and learn the methods and techniques of the soft yet firm martial art of judo. Join the head instructor, who is also the head monk of the temple, and experience a judo training session, complete with technique explanations and demonstrations.
