Measured and Practiced Grace

In tea ceremony, the ceremony aspect begins before you enter the tea room, or chashitsu. Each action is with precise and measured motion to express mutual respect between the tea master and the guest, as well as between the guests themselves. The present form of tea ceremony was molded from the ceremonies practiced at Zen temples and the gatherings held amongst the aristocracy. Following the teachings of the 16th century tea master, Sen no Rikyu, tea ceremony was closely associated with Zen practices and focused on creating a once-in-a-lifetime meeting between the tea master host and the guest over a bowl of delicious tea. At this tea room studio west of Hiroshima City, immerse yourself in the formal methods and mannerisms of participating in a tea ceremony, from before you enter the tea room until you exit the tea room. After this introduction to all things tea ceremony, savor the flavors of matcha served by the tea master.
