A Sip of Tea, A Taste of Culture

The city of Kanazawa possesses an intrinsic relationship to tea. Beyond the historic tea house districts, well-preserved with machiya houses and bustling with the activity of artful Kanazawa geisha, unbroken threads link modern tea culture to its origins in the 16th century and the teachings of Sen no Rikyu. Countless different schools of tea ceremony still flourish in contemporary times all extending back towards Rikyu and his disciples; in Kanazawa specifically, thanks in part of the Maeda clan who funded the development of arts in the domain and recruited top tea masters to proliferate the art. One such school is the Sowa, a samurai-style tea ceremony enriched by the refined sensibilities of the aristocracy—a style both resplendent and meditative. Founder Sowa Kanamori was reputed to have a keen eye for tea utensils, a defining characteristic even to this days, with chawon tea cups and serving materials selected especially to suit the season and occasion.Learn the art of sado directly from the current head of the Sowa school of tea ceremony in a space imbued with both tranquility and storied tradition, enjoying the taste of matcha and an atmosphere that is at once meditative, refined, and deeply connected to centuries of cultural heritage.
