Meet the Master
Hideki is a 3rd-generation rattan artisan sustaining his family's studio, with various members awarded as certified Bunkyo Ward Master Craftsmen, among other laurels. As one of the last strongholds of craftsmanship in the neighborhood, he transforms raw rattan material into an array of well-crafted, woven masterpieces.
What you’ll do
Join a 3rd-generation rattan artisan in his central Tokyo studio. Learn about the history of rattan in Japan and how rattan items are crafted. Then, craft your own rattan fan to take home with you after you're done.

A Unbreakable Bend
Durable, pliable, and grown deep in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, rattan is recognizable nearly worldwide, its organic woven fibers creating outdoor chairs, baskets, and a range of other home decor and furniture. While some sources date the existence of rattan in Japan as far back as 1000 years, the craft took off following the Meiji Period, when increased international interaction allowed for Japanese artisans to deftly adopt the material into their work. Steamed flexible, rattan can then be bent, knit, and wound into an array of items, hardening as it dries, and lasting for decades long after. In the heart of Tokyo, this rattan workshop has crafted elegant rattan items for daily use since 1931, and is now operated by the 3rd-generation craftsman, carrying on his family's legacy. Join him in a private crafting workshop to create your own rattan fan and experience a finely woven heritage of centuries-old craftsmanship.
