Traditional textile, dazzling design

A tapestry of techniques refined for more than 1,600 years, Japanese embroidery (nihon shishu) originated alongside religious practice as a means of adorning ritual textiles with sacred beauty. Over time, its use expanded beyond temples and shrines to the aristocratic courts of the Heian period, where long, flowing sleeves were embroidered with exquisite designs reserved for the highest ranks. Stitch by stitch, hand over hand, this refined art soon evolved into a living expression of craftsmanship—one that eventually transcended the realm of nobles to adorn everything from the ostentatious costumes of Kabuki actors to the ornate victory belts of sumo champions. Distinct from its Western counterpart, Japanese embroidery employs a specialized frame that allows for two-handed stitching and emphasizes a unique selection of techniques: kamadori, a method of layering fine and thick threads to create sculptural depth, and ma, the mindful use of empty space to achieve visual harmony—an aesthetic philosophy shared across a variety of Japanese art forms, from ikebana to calligraphy. Step inside this timeless art form through a private workshop led by a master embroiderer with over 35 years of professional experience and a keen eye for artistic detail. Through a hands-on immersion discover how a single thread can connect centuries of Japanese beauty.
