All Hung Up

Whether tucked into the artfully minimal tokonama alcoves of tea rooms or mounted on austere temple walls, Japanese hanging scrolls are as much a work of art as the masterpieces framed within them. Compared to the wooden frames historically preferred in the Western art world, kakejiku scrolls utilize fabric backing that can be easily rolled and re-rolled, making transportation and storage seamless-an essential feature required to satiate Japan's culture of seasonality, in which art, clothing, motifs, and food all swap with the season. But beyond the mere moment of framing, comes restoration - the careful process of mending centuries-old artworks into a new frame, for refreshed appreciation. With glue, brush, and backing in hand, kakejiku framing artisans transform art, both new and old, into fully-fledged, fully-framed treasures. Enter a scroll framing atelier founded in the Edo Period, filled with its own rich history of crafting heritage, and witness how art is preserved, renewed, and prepared for generations to come.
