Tranquility of Design
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of central locations in Kyoto, there is a quiet temple surrounded by nature, a pocket of peace and tranquility. Step inside and find yourself in a place that is both a Buddhist temple and a gathering place of art and artists. In the past, artists would gift or present their works to temples and those temples would protect and hand down those works for the coming generations, allowing for otherwise lost pieces to be preserved. The garden within the grounds of the temple is also a work of art, with flowering plants and trees planted throughout to color that canvas of the garden throughout the changing seasons. The second floor of the temple, not open to the public, boasts of dynamic fusuma (sliding door) artwork done by one of the artists in residence. Join the head monk as he gives a tour of the temple and its art. Then head upstairs to immerse yourself into zazen meditation led by the head monk himself and search for your inner calm surrounded by nature and art.
