Meeting in the Middle

The core philosophy of aikido lies in redirecting an opponent’s energy to break their balance rather than meeting force with force. Founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the 1920's, aikido was developed as a more peaceful and harmonious form of martial art, emphasizing balance, discipline, and mutual respect. Because aikido does not rely on physical strength or aggressive competition, it is considered accessible to people of all ages and body types. Rather than focusing on defeating others or perfecting technique alone, practitioners aim to cultivate their character and strengthen their spirit through training. Aikido combines joint-locking and empty-handed throwing techniques with methods developed to disarm or disengage armed attackers. Over generations, dojo headmasters have passed down their knowledge and techniques to students, refining them through years of dedicated practice. Join the headmaster of a local dojo for an authentic aikido training session and experience the philosophy and practice of this unique martial art firsthand.
