A private introduction to sumo

Sumo is one of Japan’s most iconic traditions—alongside Mt. Fuji, sushi, and anime—embodying both the strength and spirituality at the heart of Japanese culture. In this powerful form of wrestling, athletes wearing only mawashi belts grapple in an effort to unbalance their opponent or force them out of the ring. Yet behind the raw physicality lies a deeply spiritual history: sumo originated as a Shinto ritual, performed to pray for bountiful harvests and to honor the gods. Much of this sacred influence remains today in the rituals, etiquette, and attire that surround each bout. Since the Edo period, sumo has been a celebrated spectator sport, but the wrestlers' strict lifestyle and ceremonial discipline remain as intact as ever. In this exclusive private experience, you’ll step beyond the public arena and enter the world of sumo with no other guests—just you, the wrestlers, and their stories.
