Glide Across Glistening Scenery

The flat fields that make the Betsukai region perfect for dairy farms transform in the winter season into the ideal landscape for cross-country ski trekking. Much of the natural scenery, covered with layers of snow, has remained practically untouched since the early ages of exploration conducted in the Meiji era, while other forest views have been preserved exactly as the indigenous Ainu people of the past saw them. Even the tracks of a discontinued railroad, first laid in the early Showa period when Japan embarked on further modernization, create a seamless trail for winter expeditions. Then, detach the skies to trek on top of a frozen river, which once transported sailships, voyagers, and essential materials for early settlements in the region, before resuming the cross-country ski expedition. Led by a local outdoor expert, immerse into a historic landscape while enjoying the invigoration of winter activities.
